Phillips Academy Summer Session Job Description: Administrative Intern June 2 (arrive on campus) June 3 report to Cooley - August 8, 2025 About the Program One of the nation's premier boarding schools, Phillips Academy's Summer Session challenges students in an innovative five-week program, conducted on its picturesque campus just 21 miles north of Boston. More than 60 courses are offered, ranging from computer science to marine biology, from ethics and philosophy to economics. Summer Session students bring the world into the classroom by virtue of their enormous diversity of geographic origin, religion, ethnicity, and socioeconomic background. With strong academic records and a serious desire to spend the summer in a residential community, our students enjoy challenging themselves and one another through disciplined study. A Summer Session faculty member's experience is rigorous and thoroughly challenging, for Phillips Academy requires superior classroom performance of its teachers, Teaching Assistants (TAs), House Counselors, interns, and students alike. The Summer Session is short, intense, and strongly academic. About the Role Through its Administrative Internship Program, the Phillips Academy Summer Session offers a limited number of positions to college undergraduates. Administrative interns are charged with a wide variety of duties in support of the running of Andover's summer programs, including summer setup and preparation for the physical and technology needs for over 130 summer faculty and 600 students, coordination of all faculty and student communication during the summer, oversight of the summer office and all associated tasks - from answering the phones to handling finances, maintenance of data logs related to student attendance, behavior, and academic needs, and responding to a multitude of requests from all stakeholders. Interns are integral to the successful operation of Andover's summer programming, and the role requires a high level of self-direction and organization, as well as an ability to collaborate closely with others and communicate effectively. The tasks and skills listed below detail the basic commitments of an intern, but inevitably do not fully capture the multifaceted nature of the role. Essential Duties: Share in the completion of a variety of clerical tasks to maintain student record data, facilitate communications, oversee office equipment and supplies, and generally assist the administration, the faculty and the students during the summer. Support the pre-summer activities of student and faculty registration and coordinate the work of high school per diem workers, to prepare the campus for the start of summer. Act as the primary liaison between faculty, students, families and the administrative team at Phillips Academy Summer Session. Filling supply requests, managing day and overnight excuses, documenting student absences and tardiness, contacting students, and responding to parent calls and emails are just some of the tasks interns should expect to complete during the summer in support of effective communications across stakeholders. Manage the summer session's social media presence by regularly posting to Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts, and updating the summer session website and web-based portals. Interns staff the Summer Session 7-day work week. At the start of the summer, the interns work together to design a schedule that ensures office coverage from 7am-10pm daily during the five weeks when classes are in session. Each intern will have at least one full day off per week. Essential Skills: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing many tasks at once. Ability to work independently, without substantial guidance or supervision. Ability to work effectively as part of a team, which may include delegation of tasks to others, regular communication about the status of projects, and sharing responsibilities. Highly effective written and verbal communication skills. Strong organization skills; ability to manage time and materials in order to maximize efficiency, minimize redundancy, and ensure completion of all tasks. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and basic database applications. Interns receive an hourly wage plus room and board (when the dining facility, also known as Paresky Commons is open) and housing for eight weeks. Included in the summer compensation is an additional stipend to cover any meals needed prior to the opening of the dining hall. For a complete description of the Summer Session program, please view the 2025 catalog on our website Familiarity with the campus and operations of Phillips Academy is helpful, but not required.
